The Christian-based religion that Jehovah’s Witnesses follow is absolutely fascinating. There are so many elements to it that you can literally get lost in all the information if you were not raised within a home following the religion. However, there is one element above all others that you will notice and take away from the start. If you are to learn one thing about Jehovah’s Witnesses it is that their core beliefs and practices have one central factor to them – a strong sense of right and wrong. Morality is incredibly important and has a huge impact on their everyday lives.
Morality arguably governs the lives of Jehovah’s Witnesses everywhere in virtually everything they do because they have a particularly black and white view of right and wrong. Non-Witnesses have plenty of shades of grey and have accepted morality levels that differ wildly from those that Witnesses do hold dear. The latter group is often considered to be far more conservative in their values but their enhanced level of morality is really to be commended as it reflects many of the traditional values that society has lost.
Jehovah’s Witnesses have strong moral codes concerning all sorts of areas of their lives, from the way that they dress to the role of sex in relationships to the presence of certain substances. Starting with the way that they dress, it is important for men and women to dress modestly. This does not only concern the way that the individual dresses but also the grooming aspect as well. It is considered wrong to wear flashy items, including makeup and jewellery. This has as much to do with practices to attract the opposite sex as it does to displaying wealth. However, they do have to appear smart at all times to avoid looking rebellious!
In terms of their overall behaviours, they are not allowed to take drugs, smoke or get drunk as all three are considered to be sinful. Putting harmful substances into your body might be considered OK in some areas of society now but Jehovah’s Witnesses still hold it as sinful because of the potential health implications and the pollution of the body. Caffeine and alcohol, although considered to be drugs, are permitted within reason because there is no medical evidence to suggest that they can be harmful if consumed in moderation.
The views that Jehovah’s Witnesses hold of sex are very black and white. Sex is only permitted between a man and women within the sanctity of marriage. Homosexual and adulterous sex are considered sinful, as is sex before marriage. In this way, the Jehovah’s Witnesses view of morality is very traditional and conservative. Sex is an act that is performed only in the marital bed in the Bible and so that holds for the Witnesses today. This goes some way to indicating why adultery is the only possible grounds for divorce that Jehovah’s Witnesses have.
The final area to look at if you want a good idea of Jehovah’s Witnesses morality is their role within the military and politics. They refuse to take part in any form of military organisation because they consider themselves as neutral under God. They have faced problems as conscientious objectors in the past, especially during World War II when some were executed for refusing to serve but it is more acceptable today. Dying for their own brand of morality was certainly a stance to make back then but the strength of that generation reinforced the morality of this one.
